October 2016: New module and new features
Load capacity calculation of shafts and axles according to DIN 743
The new module for calculating the load capacity of shafts enables the designer to decrease shafting diameters compared to classification societies rules, while checking the shaft strength, fatigue and
endurance limits according to German standard DIN 743. This may result in significant cost reductions of propulsion systems.
E-motor short circuit torsional vibration
Another addition is the calculation of transient torsional vibration of the shafting system caused by e-motor short circuit. The calculated results also include the effect of the Variable Frequency
Drive (VFD). Short circuits of two- and three-phase e-motors can be analysed.
Aft most bearing lubrication criteria according to DNV GL
This feature provides calculation of the minimum shaft speed that ensures hydrodynamic lubrication of a metal stern tube bearing according to DNV GL RU-SHIP-Pt4Ch2 rules. Both single slope as well as
double slope bush types are supported.
Release Advanced Whirling Vibration Module
The new ShaftDesigner Advanced Whirling Vibration Module has been released.
Especially customers active in the (super)yacht industry will benefit from the new features including
calculation of whirling vibration damped natural frequencies, forced whirling vibration and 3D
animations for the presentation of the results.

ShaftDesigner full speed ahead
The global group of ShaftDesigner users is increasing fast. Within more and more companies ShaftDesigner
is used for shaft alignment and vibration calculations.
Please take a look on our reference page
to see which companies benefit from using ShaftDesigner.
MAN Diesel & Turbo and Schottel on board
The ShaftDesigner team proudly welcomed MAN Diesel & Turbo and Schottel-Schiffsmaschinen GmbH as
customers. Both companies are now using network floating ShaftDesigner software licenses on their
networks. These network licenses make it possible to even share licenses and projects between offices
anywhere around the globe.
64-bit operating systems supported
Now the ShaftDesigner stand alone and network versions are supported on 64-bit operating systems.
The software runs perfect on the latest client and server versions of Microsoft Windows.
STX Europe orders ShaftDesigner
STX Europe has purchased Machine Support's ShaftDesigner software for the STX Finland yards in Turku and Rauma. This order is the result of an extensive technical and commercial investigation. Please look under References for more information.
Torsional Vibration Ice Impact feature finished
Our ShaftDesigner developers finished the programming of an Ice Impact feature for the Torsional Vibration module.
The feature allows to set several parameters including ice class, classification society, accuracy, rotations after impact and number of calculation threads.
We received several requests from the industry for an Ice Impact analysis and decided to add it to the ShaftDesigner
package to make it even more complete. We are currently in the test phase and expect to be able to release it in the
first quarter of 2011. For more information please see the

ShaftDesigner Successful at SMM 2010
This year the ShaftDesigner team was present on the SKF Machine Support stand at the SMM exhibition in
Hamburg, Germany. Once again the interest was great with representatives of OEM’s, classification
societies and ship designers taking the opportunity to talk to us about the newest updates and
features.
The SMM 2010 was a great success with more than 50.000 visitors, making it the largest marine
exhibition in the world. The ShaftDesigner team looks forward to come back in 2012. In the meantime
keep an eye on our website for other upcoming events.
Successful market introduction of ShaftDesigner at Nor-Shipping 2009
We successfully introduced the ShaftDesigner software to a selected group of press and relations
during the Nor-Shipping 2009 exhibition in Norway. During the organised conferences for the ShaftDesigner
launch we welcomed editors from magazines and with 25 potential customers the conference room was full. For
some of them the conference about ShaftDesigner was the main reason to travel to Norway. Dr. Yuriy Batrak,
head of the ShaftDesigner programming team, gave an impressive demonstration of the software and his
knowledge about the theory behind it. We received valuable technical feedback from the interested
audience.
